FAQs

Here are some frequently asked questions about selecting a disc jockey service. We hope that this information is helpful in selecting Funtastic Sound as the entertainment for your special event.

Question:  Why do we need a DJ? We can hook an ipod up to a sound system and have music playing all the time.

That's true, you can do that, but the reasons to hire a professional DJ are these: A DJ will play music from your request list and take guests requests, plus play music that is known to motivate a crowd to dance. In addition, a DJ does more than just play music. A DJ will make all the necessary announcements and entertain your guests by employing a number of activities or games. When the people have fun, the party is a success. A professional DJ is skilled at creating that atmosphere of fun. Also, unless you rent a commercial grade sound system, there's a chance that a home entertainment system won't stand the rigors of continuous play at pumped up, bass driven volumes.

Question: What kind of music do you play?

We program the music from three sources, your likes and dislikes (yes, we like to know what songs you don't want played), your guests requests, and songs proven to motivate a crowd to have fun and dance. Our library contains over 20,000 titles ranging from 40's big band/swing, all the way up to today's hits, covering the most popular musical genres through those decades. We can handle just about any music taste out there.

Question: Some DJ companies look good on paper, but we've heard horror stories about the old "bait and switch" where a rookie is sent to do a wedding.  Do we have to worry about that with you?

We've heard (and seen) those horror stories too. At Funtastic Sound, you're guaranteed to get a seasoned professional with at least 10 years experience and a vast music library.

Question: We see so many different prices. Why is that?

DJs come in all shapes and sizes and prices. One thing to remember when selecting your entertainment is that you get what you pay for. Don't settle on the cheapest service you can find. You may regret it, especially if the event is a special day in your life, like your wedding day. Things you should take into consideration when shopping for entertainment are, the experience level of the DJ,  the equipment configuration (there are many types and levels of sound and lighting equipment), the size and source of the music library, how many entertainers are included in the quote, and the number of hours which are included in the pricing. Also, remember that formal parties, such as weddings, include much planning and preparation between the client and DJ, way before the event takes place. Therefore pricing for these parties can be considerably higher than for less structured events.

Question: The source of the music library? Why is that important?

Unfortunately, piracy of music has become a real problem in the industry and many DJs offer low pricing because they are getting their music illegally. This practice hurts legitimate entertainers like Funtastic, who purchase music legally. How does this affect you? Maybe it won't, but the recording industry is cracking down on piracy and you don't want to find out the week of your wedding that your DJ is in jail for illegal music downloading. It's happened.

Question: Can we come and see you perform before we hire you?

The practice of auditioning an entertainer came from the days when bands were commonly hired to do weddings and other events. Certainly performers covering popular tunes should be checked out to see just how close to the original they sound. Disc jockeys are bringing the original artist to your event, so that eliminates the worry of how the music will sound. So the question that remains is, how good is the DJ in terms of motivating the crowd to dance and have fun. Seeing a disc jockey performing at a public venue such as a bar or fundraiser, is never a problem. However, weddings and other family oriented events are private functions and admittance is by invitation only. The DJ is not authorized to invite prospective clients to someone else's special day to promote their business. We respect our clients and we will not "invite" people in for this purpose. We will gladly provide you with references, who will be happy to let you know how much fun everyone had at their event and how easy we were to work with. Also, and we can't stress this enough, we encourage a personal consultation so that we may have the opportunity to discuss your plans and answer all your questions about Funtastic Sound. When you become our client, you can be assured that no one will be "crashing" your party to watch the DJ. So, please understand that we can only invite you to a public performance, and if we have one scheduled that's convenient for you, by all means "come on down".
